SEX ED FOR TEENS & TWEENS

As of 2023, only 38 states and the District of Columbia mandate sex education and/or HIV education in schools, but only 17 states require that the curricula be medically accurate. Most sex ed programming in the U.S. subjects young people to incorrect, insufficient, and even dehumanizing curricula that intentionally withholds essential information while reinforcing stereotypes and stigma. It is designed to scare and misinform, not educate and support.

Despite decades of research consistently showing how ineffective and harmful it is, this kind of “sex ed” is legal and even endorsed by the parents, teachers, lawmakers, and other adults in charge of deciding what is and isn’t taught in schools. I strongly believe this is abuse.

Access to accurate, expansive, and life-affirming sex education has become a rare privilege, and young people deserve better. This is one of the reasons I do this work.

WHY WORK WITH ME?

I am known for my friendly, empathetic, and often entertaining facilitation and teaching skills, as well as my ability to connect with young people on an equal playing field. I strongly believe that teenagers deserve access to accurate and transparent information. These young adults are smart, savvy, socially aware, capable, and curious — and in many cases desperate for someone to tell them the truth about what it’s like to be human. It is an honor to be the trusted adult that I and so many of my friends and colleagues lacked when we were growing up.

HOW I GOT HERE:

  • 1990-2002 - A curious kid/teenager with no one to talk to about bodies, sex, identity, and relationships, and only a small-town library and old issues of Cosmopolitan and Glamour to rely on (yikes).

  • 2007-2015 - A journalist, writer, and unofficial sex educator specializing in sexuality research and adult industry topics.

  • February-April 2015 - Completed San Francisco Sex Information sex educator training with a professional endorsement.

  • January 2016 - Completed Planned Parenthood Los Angeles’s School-based Sex Ed training.

  • March 2016 - Founded Everyone Deserves Sex Ed, an education and professional development organization.

  • February 2016-August 2017 - Taught a state-approved sex ed curriculum on behalf of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles to 9th graders throughout Los Angeles County.

  • 2016-present - Facilitate healthy sexuality & relationships groups to teenagers and young adults at outpatient, in-patient, and PHP facilities that treat mental illness and/or substance use disorder.

  • 2020-present - Host private sex ed classes and programming to teenagers in and out of school settings.

  • 2022 - Honored with the Professional Standard of Excellence Award by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT)

MY VALUES & TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

  • Abstinence-only or abstinence-stressed sex ed is as useful and logical as teaching teenagers to drive by telling them to just stay home. (Though staying home is a valid and common choice!)

  • Sex ed that emphasizes sex within marriage is like teaching teenagers to drive by telling them to only drive cars that they legally own.

  • Sex ed that doesn’t discuss topics like contraception, STI prevention, communication skills, and affirmative consent is like teaching driving without telling anyone about seatbelts, airbags, or rules of the road.

  • Sex ed that emphasizes only negative outcomes to teen sex is like teaching driving by only talking about car accidents.

  • Sex ed that centers heterosexual, cisgender identities is like teaching driving by pretending all cars are 4-door sedans with automatic transmissions — and that any other kind of vehicle simply doesn’t exist.

  • The sex ed we need and deserve is sex ed that acknowledges ALL the reasons why people do and don’t drive, the MANY methods of transportation to choose from, how to access and use them as safely as possible, how to navigate everyone else on the road, why you can’t take someone’s car without their permission, how to respect other drivers while prioritizing your safety, how to handle accidents and fender benders, how to take responsibility when you’re at fault, and how not to be “that jerk” on the road.

  • Evidence that comprehensive sex ed is effective and essential for young people is vast and undeniable.

  • Evidence that abstinence-only sex ed is harmful and ineffective is vast and undeniable.
